Independent voices. Connected communities. A stronger future for journalism.
A National Network of Community Newsrooms
The Australia News Network (ANN) is building a new kind of media platform: a network of community newsrooms across the country, designed to give Australians back their voice in the national conversation.
From major cities to the most remote towns, we are creating a system where local reporting feeds into a national newsroom, ensuring that stories are grounded in community realities but delivered with professional standards and broadcast quality.
Why We Exist
Australians deserve more than recycled headlines. Too often, communities—particularly in regional and remote areas—are left without independent, trusted coverage. This creates an information gap that weakens democracy, limits local development, and leaves citizens without the facts they need to make informed decisions.
ANN exists to close that gap. We are here to make sure that every community has access to reliable news, produced by people who live there, supported by the tools and technology of a modern newsroom.
Journalism as a Public Trust
For ANN, journalism is not simply a business—it is a public trust. News connects us to our history, gives us clarity in the present, and shapes the future we want to build together.
We believe every community has the right to tell its own story—to control its narrative, to be heard nationally, and to contribute to Australia’s collective self-determination. By linking community newsrooms through a shared system, ANN creates a space where those stories are amplified with independence, professionalism, and depth.
Building the Network
Our vision is practical and ambitious:
Local Newsrooms:
ANN will support communities to establish their own independent newsrooms, staffed by local reporters and contributors.
Shared Technology:
Using the globally trusted NewsBoss system, local teams produce stories that are published instantly to both local and national channels.
National Reach:
Local stories flow into ANN’s central newsroom, where they are shared nationally and, when relevant, globally.
Training & Support:
Reporters, students, and community members will receive mentorship and training to ensure newsrooms are sustainable and professional.
This structure means that the voice of a small town can be heard on the national stage, while national events are explained in ways that resonate locally.
Our Commitment to Independence
ANN is committed to editorial independence and transparency.
We will publish a full list of donors contributing over $1,000 annually.
We will not accept funds from political parties, government entities, or any source that compromises our independence.
All editorial decisions are made by ANN’s newsroom, free from outside influence.
The Path Ahead
ANN is more than a news service—it is a movement to rebuild trust in Australian journalism. By creating a network of community-led newsrooms, we are strengthening democracy, empowering communities, and ensuring Australians can make informed decisions about their future.
This is not just about “press freedom.” It is about building a media system that belongs to the people.
Together, we can ensure that every community—regional, urban, and remote—has a voice in shaping Australia’s story.
